Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning Equipment Direct from the Dealer to You!

We got a great question today through email, thought we’d share it with everyone:

Question:

I am interested in ordering a Lennox G61MPV-045-230 furnace with a Lennox XC13-018-230 1.5-ton outdoorunit. I plan to install the furnace horizontally. The smallest cased coil you show for horizontal installation is a 3 ton. Will a 3-ton coil work with a Lennox XC13-018-230?

Answer:

If you look in the engineering handbook for the XC13, you should see some ratings with the CH33-36A/B coils. So mechanically there is no problem matching the condensing unit to the coil. http://www.hvac-direct.com/pdf_files/engineering/ehb_xc13_0512.pdf
However, Lennox will not rate that furnace with that combination for us. By moving jumpers and energizing certain terminals on the furnace, we can get the airflow low enough to serve the purpose, but again Lennox will not rate it at anything but normal speed tap for the given blower of the furnace. In this case a 3-ton blower. The reason for this is when they submit the ratings to ARI they would have to submit special wiring and blower set up instructions so that if ARI decides to test the combination, they will do it on the correct blower set up. Lennox just won’t, or shouldn’t, do this for us. And obviously there will be issues trying to run a 1.5-ton condensing unit at 1200 cfm. Since by law, we can no longer sell combinations that are not rateable to the minimum SEER. I cannot suggest doing this combination. I hate to tell someone to oversize, but you could use a 2-ton Lennox Model XC13-024-230 with the furnace have no issues.
